Chickmagalur is situated about 250 km away from Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka in India. With marvellous roads connecting the two cities, it has turned it into a popular weekend road trip. It is a beautiful town with fabulous natural beauty. Trekkers, as well as families, can plan a long weekend tour to Chickmagalur to get themselves refreshed.

Chickmagalur can be reached from Bengaluru via NH4 by road, and is also well connected by the Railways. On the way, take some time out to visit the ancient  Hoysala temple complex in Belur. It is situated 220 km from Bengaluru and 30 km from Chikmagalur. The intricate carvings on the stones in the temple inspire awe and make the temple a beauty to behold. The sculptures in the temple were intricately carved as the temple took over a century to be completed.

From the temple, you can head off to Chikmagalur, which is around 30 km away. It is a calm and serene town, but its growing popularity is making it a little crowded during the peak tourist season.

Chickmagalur has some beautiful hills and waterfalls nearby. Visit the Kemmanagundi hills, which is a part of the Baba Budan Range of Hills of Karnataka. On the way, you can visit the Hebbe falls. However, it requires you to do a 2 km trek. So, try to go there only if you’re fond of trekking.

Kemmanagundi is a hill station located 1434 m above mean sea level. It is situated in the midst of a dense forest and offers a panoramic view of the hills surrounding it. It is very well maintained and there are many landscaped gardens that make the place even more beautiful.

From Kemmanagundi visit the Kalhatti (Kalahasti) falls which is just 10 km away. Here the water drops from a height of 122 m and is a sight to behold, especially in the monsoons. The waterfall derives its name Kalahasti from the elephant shaped rock from which the water plunges down. There is a temple here that can also be visited.

You can visit the Baba Budana Giri Hills located in this area. Those who love trekking can follow the trekking trail between Baba Budana Giri and Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in the Baba Budana Giri range. Situated at the height of 1930 m, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in the state of Karnataka. There is a temple of Baba Budana  located near this peak, which is considered to be a holy place by the local people. It is said that during the 17th century, A Sufi saint named Baba Budan had meditated at this place for many years.

The Manikyadhara Falls situated on the Baba Budana Giri Hills near Kemmangundi is located 40 km from the town of Chikmagalur. It is another major tourist attraction. The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary located 30 km away is also worth a visit.

Chikmagalur has a pleasant climate throughout the year. However, the best time to visit this area is from September to May. With so much natural beauty, it is one of the most beautiful places in south India and is truly worth a visit. www.dmvilla.com
